‘DEEP EXPERIENCE THE INAKA -TENRYUKYO・IIDA CITY-’ in Iida, Nagano Prefecture

As part of the ongoing Channel47 project, which uses the power of local resources and entertainment to share Japan and its local culture with the world, a new travel experience titled ‘DEEP EXPERIENCE THE INAKA -TENRYUKYO・IIDA CITY-’ officially went on sale on November 12, 2024, taking visitors to Iida, Nagano Prefecture.

Iida City in Nagano Prefecture will be the main organizer of the tour, with the city selected by the Japan Tourism Agency in 2024 for its ‘Project to Promote Expansion and Quality of Inbound Tourism by Providing Special Experiences for Visitors.’ Participants will be able to enjoy the unique nature, food, and culture in Minami Shinshu while getting to know its people.

The project was commissioned by the Neyaneya Tenryukyo Executive Committee, a volunteer group that promotes Tenryu Gorge. The tour for inbound travelers, particularly those from Taiwan, can be enjoyed by those who have visited Japan before, as the Minami Shinshu Tourism Bureau wants visitors to experience the “real Japanese countryside” in the Tenryu Gorge area of Iida.

The “ordinary” things that are part of everyday life in the countryside can seem “special” to city dwellers. Visitors will rediscover the gratitude and warmth of “ordinary” things and will have a unique and original experience through deep connections with local people that transcend standard tourism. Tourists can experience a warm vacation that makes them want to say “I’m home,” and “See you later,” as if they’ve returned to their origins.

■An Emotional Experience That Can Only Be Experienced Here

Guests will board a limited express train departing from JR Toyohashi Station on the Tokaido Shinkansen to JR Tenryukyo Station to begin their three-day, two-night tour. Visitors can enjoy special snacks and drinks utilizing local ingredients and supervised by the famous local restaurant Yukimoto, one of the 35 restaurants out of 850,000 nationwide to be awarded “Gold” status on Tabelog, a popular restaurant rating site in Japan.

The Tenryu Gorge area offers not only surprises and impressive views, but also heartwarming interactions and special moments. Visitors can experience ‘Wayuraku,’ a classical performing art found in Iida, as well as ‘Imada Ningyo Joururi, a traditional rural art form. Guests can explore the local agriculture and livestock farming, tasting the area’s famous apples and Nagano pork. During their homestay, visitors can enjoy interacting with local residents, and the program offers unique experiences for each of the four seasons, including rafting along the Tenryu River in a peaceful national park.

The area is also home to a magical festival in which the gods are entertained at local hot springs, which is said to have inspired a world-renowned animated film. Visitors can experience a place where ancient Japanese traditions are still very much alive.

Guests will enjoy a unique and moving experience while exploring the hills and valleys of Minami Shinshu, where they can immerse themselves in classic Japanese landscapes and traditional culture while interacting with kind locals.
