Gunma Prefecture’s Ikaho Onsen to Host Two Events to Combining Tradition and Entertainment

2022.10.20

Two unique events will be held at Ikaho Onsen in Gunma Prefecture in November, inviting visitors to rediscover the charm of the area’s hot spring culture. With over 400 years of history, the area also has a robust geiko culture as well. These events are being held in collaboration with Channel 47, a project using the power of entertainment to share Japan and its local culture with the entirety of the country and the world.

■IKAHO GEIGI Lab 2022, a Casual Geiko Experience

The IKAHO GEIGI Lab will invite visitors to experience geiko culture in a more casual way. The first phase of the event will be held on November 4, 5, and 12 at the famous local inn Tamaki. During the hands-on experience, geiko will perform traditional dances and songs as guests enjoy colorful desserts and lunch items made from local ingredients in a comfortable tatami room. Mikifuu Hanayanagi, a dancer and part-time lecturer at the Department of Traditional Japanese Music at Tokyo University of the Arts, and Yuri Kobayashi, a nagauta performer, will both serve as special guest performers. This new kind of geiko experience allows guests to dress more casually while also being respectful of tradition.

■IKAHO ART A LIVE 2022, Decorating the Town of Ikaho

The IKAHO ART A LIVE project aims to combine the rich traditions of the historic hot spring resort with new forms of entertainment. This will be the second year of the event, and it will run from November 23 until November 27. NAKED, INC., a creative company known for its projection mapping experience and unique illuminations, will light up the area around the hot spring and open several fun events for visitors to enjoy. A projection-mapped photo spot will no doubt be popular on social media, while the beloved NAKED Distance Lanterns will be available for guests to carry through the stone streets. NAKED’s Flower Fortune Telling event, popular last year, will return as well, with plenty more surprises in store about every corner.

On November 25, a stage will be erected at the gateway to the city, the Ikaho Onsen Stone Steps. World-renowned shinobue player Kazuya Sato will perform The Four Seasons of Ikaho and other classic songs inspired by the historical area.
